'Untitled' - Photography
Having a keen personal indulgence in the two decades of 1970s and 1980s Manchester music industry exploded and produced some of the best musicians and creative minds from Joy Division and The Smiths to Peter Saville and Kevin Cummins. Bailey visits the soil on which Joy Division once stood when shooting with Kevin Cummins in and around Manchester, where he documents, emulates and re-creates ‘the journey’ from Manchester Cathedral passing over Epping Walk Bridge to Royce Road. Capturing the remaining remnants of this period in British musical history.
With a main body of work consisting of modern day photography that revels in 70’s nostalgia, black and white imagery with a heavy focus on the north of England. Town and cities such as Barnsley, Sheffield and Manchester due to their industrial, working class heritage are of major interest. From flats to factories, pylons to bridges and anything else that revolves around industry may be subject to exposure. The eyes are tricked momentarily on whether the date is 2014 or 1974 as he tries to submerge the mind in the bleakness of working class areas and post-Industrial Britain. With a background in graphics; lines, shapes, symmetry and textures are used to try to attract the viewer, to evoke emotion and tell a story. Keeping a minimal approach, the images aren’t over complicated and keep the subject isolated.
