'Mapchester' - Mixed Media/Sculpture

"A large scale map of Manchester, made out of different materials primarily fabrics. It will highlight areas in which notable figure are from by using iconic images, aspects of Manchester culture and lifestyle. It will act as a tapestry of understanding of the cities graphical nature as well as an insight in the culture."

Mapchester is a visual representation of Manchester. A hand down A0 map of the city is used as the background. Textured layers are then built up using a variety of mixed media including fabrics, photographs, acrylic paints and embroidery. Details upon the map are formed in response to notable figures, buildings and aspects of Manchester culture/lifestyle by using iconic imagery. It acts as a tapestry of understanding of the cities graphical nature as well as an insight in the culture.

My artist practice has been a constant exploration primarily forming through the use of maps, journeys and my own personal relation to certain locations and feelings surrounding this. My work continuously explores the concepts of wanderlust, the want/need for freedom. It also invites the viewer to think about how we rely on a map to be accurate, a symbol of safety and security and sometimes distorting this concept. Works are created in a personal response to feelings and memories but through the use of standardised maps, iconic landmarks and symbol, the viewer gains an understanding of thematic nature of the practice.
